You can play against players all around world using four different game modes. You can use the Avatar Customize Option to change which avatar is used to represent you to your opponents.

Competitive matches which affect your standing on the official ladder rankings.
Create a custom game[]
This option allows you to choose the map and the settings of the battle. If you want to create a private game with your friends, you can choose to set a password on your game room.
You can create custom games on both Battle Maps and Co-op maps.
Note: If you are not a Premium or Elite member, you can't play all of the maps, just a limited selection.
Play alone with AI[]
It is similar to "Create a custom match", but you can only play with an AI player, either as opposition or as a partner.
